Smart cities of the 21st century

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá konceptem chytrých měst 21. století. Jejím účelem je popsat zmíněný fenomén a diskutovat jeho zavedení. Konkrétně rozebírá šest oblastí, do kterých se koncept dělí a popisuje moderní technologie využívané v chytrých městech. Dále zmiňuje problematiku kyberbezpečnosti ve spojitosti s ochranou osobních dat a zajištěním správného fungování města. Jako příklady chytrých měst jsou uvedené Praha a Londýn, u kterých jsou rozebrány jejich individuální strategie pro zavádění konceptu společně s příklady chytrých projektů, které už města uskutečnila. Na základě dvou vybraných indexů je pak provedeno porovnání úrovně chytrosti daných měst.
Peggy Guggenheim in a Cultural-Political Picture of her Time

Peggy Guggenheim belongs to the essential collectible figures of the 20th century art. She has created a unique art collection during her lifetime and she has opened up new artistic movements (in particular Abstract art) by organizing exhibitions, debates and by publishing catalogues in which she participated. She was active in many art projects and she had friendship among many after-war modern artists. Her collection included front works of Cubism, Futurism, Metaphysical art, Abstract art, Surrealism and Avantgard sculpture. Peggy moved to the Venetian palace Venier dei Leoni in 1949, where she was living following thirty years. Today her extensive collection is opened to public under the patronage of Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The Diploma thesis "Peggy Guggenheim in a Cultural-Political Picture of her Time" will outline Peggy Guggenheim's life in context of emerging modern art (particularly American art) and her diverse activities which were connected with it. Furthermore it will focus on culture-political context of post-war time and finally it will evaluate her contribution to evolution of abstract art and its approach to the general public.
Festival of Britain and Its Reflection in the British Society (1951)

This thesis deals with British internal and external political developments after the Second World War which resulted in organizing the Festival of Britain in 1951. The Festival was aimed to be a distraction for the British public and a remainder of the great history and cultural heritage of the United Kingdom and the British Empire. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first one deals with the post-war development in the world, its reorganization into the Cold War, and the process of decolonization. The second chapter is focused on domestic political reforms, especially social reforms, of the Labour Party between 1945 and 1951. Resilience as the modern approach to cities' security: Critical analysis of the London case

This thesis examines the understanding of the concept of resilience in urban security with focus on countering terrorism and emergency planning in London between 2000 and 2015. It analyses the implementation of the concept and the results of it. The thesis first describes the theoretical backgrounds of the concept and creates a classification based on the evolution of the concept. A discourse analysis of security strategies and other official documents is done to demonstrate how resilience was conceptualised in the United Kingdom and how it evolved. Also the influence of private actors is evalueted. The same discourse analysis is done on the level of the city of London. The thesis then describes the specific implementation of resilience that impacts everyday lives of London citizens and it shows that the measures penetrates every aspect of it. The International Political Sociology and the theory of insecuritization is used to assess the findings. It concludes that resilience is used as a governing tool enabeling the UK government to produce an appearance of decisive governing, while it transfers the actual responsibility for everyday security to the citizens and their communities. American Bar - Phenomenon of European Cities: London, Berlin, Prague Contribution to the History of Bar Culture in Western and Central Europe between the Two World Wars

The thesis deals with the formation of the European bar scene in the interwar period through the "new" phenomenon of entertainment, so called the American Bar which became the symbolic point of social gathering for elites. However, it was the fuel of social progress as an open forum for communication between genders as well. The main part focuses on a comprehensive analysis of the American Bar and its development as the phenomenon, based on the comparison of European cities, particularly London, Berlin and Prague. The main aim of the study was to analyze the phenomenon as the location of the post-war feelings and the option for the new wave of hedonism associated with rising living standards, while the cities were given into clash in their intensity manifestations of the phenomenon. The thesis outlines the overall atmosphere of the bar from many different perspectives, above all, through the forms of bar promotion, the activities of associations, legislative responses, the normal operation of the bar, the professional part of the bar and the everyday socio-cultural impact on the lives of consumers, but also by reflecting on the bar culture in art.

Media coverage of terrorist attacks in London in 2017: Comparison of news portals Aktuálně.cz and The Guardian

This thesis is focused on the media coverage of four terrorist attacks that happened in London in 2017. The subject of the research are photographs which were published after the attacks on Czech online news media Aktuálně.cz and British online news portal The Guardian. The coverage on both media is in the case of each attack followed for one week. The aim of this thesis is to describe which photographs both media published, with the main emphasis on certain technical and content variables. Furthermore, the difference between visual representation in Czech and British media is also a subject of this work.
When the City is Burning: Great Fire of London in 1666.

This diploma thesis is focused on the Great Fire of London in the year 1666 and on the course of events that started it. Based on historical sources, the author will try to explain how did the city leaders confront this tragedy and how was the Great Fire seen by the public. The author will also present some possible plans for the reconstruction of the city of London as well as the final plan which gave the city its current shape. This thesis is divided into three sections, first of which introduces the historical context of 17th century in England. The second part is focused on the fire itself - its cause, its development and its aftermath. The last section will introduce reconstruction plans made by five important people of the time as well as the progress of the reconstruction. Last but not least, the memorials of the Great Fire will also be mentioned in this thesis.
